This Week in Freebies: Happy Holidays Edition
Well, the holidays are upon us and even the artists and labels are getting festive. That means there are a lot of freebies on the way. To give you an idea of what’s to come, I posted 63 free tunes last December and 57 in January on my blog. But I’m not just talking quantity, I’m talking quality here too. There’s been some really good music in the mix so far and toward the end of the month I’m going to pick out my top 10 freebies of 2011 for you (more on that in a couple weeks).
This week though, I’ve already started to see some of the holiday gift tracks roll in. For example, DJ Mag and Juno Downloads are doing a “Great Christmas Free Track Giveaway” throughout the month of December. Each day, a new free track is revealed for a limited time for download. Don’t forget to bookmark and check that site daily.
Also look out for some gifts from Hospital Records, which is rewarding customers again with their Christmas Cracker EP 2011. Four unreleased Hospital tunes will make its way to your account if you bought something from the Hospital store this past year. If you recall from 2010, they gave away some decent music from the likes of Logistics, Danny Byrd, Bop & Despot and Nu:Tone.
Also this past week, Peer Pressure Recordings opened its vaults. Their first “Merry Christmas” gift came in the form of two Random Movement tunes (“A Quick Thought” and “Dancing with Devils”). Keep a lookout for more on the way there too.
Aside from that quick holiday recap, here are my top three freebies for this week.
DJ Shadow – “Midnight in a Perfect World” (Magnafide D&B Bootleg)
A friend introduced me to DJ shadow in college and I’ve had a soft spot for him since. “Midnight in a Perfect World” is kind of a classic in my opinion, so I was a little cautious when I saw it was given some new treatment. I mean, come on, “Entroducing” landed DJ Shadow in the Guinness World Records book for releasing the first album created using exclusively sampled sounds. Anyway, I wasn’t disappointed. I know this tune has been floating around for a little, but better late than never for me to share this one with you all. Plus, Magnafide is out of LA, so I have to support Cali.

Prolix – Unit 22
Rough day a work? Not do so well on a recent test? Find out some bad news? No matter. This tune will clear anything out weighing heavy on your brain. Ok, well it might first scramble things around a little before it gives it a swift kick in the rear out the door. For those who know me, I typically veer toward the “softer” side of drum and bass, but dammit, sometimes you need something a little more aggressive. For that reason, this is going on my gym mix to keep me pumped when I start to fail on my New Year’s resolution to get into better shape. Prolix is no joke.

George Harrold – The Look In Her Eyes
This week’s gold star goes to George Harrold for getting some good attention for his first completed drum and bass tune (according to 17tumba’s YouTube channel). YouTube had done some incredible things for music promotion, aside from offering a great new venue for useless comment trolls. "People" seem to like the “epic” bass line, but I’ll let you decide when you hear and think about this first attempt yourself.
